AFC Wulfurians are keen to sign off at home on a high
AFC Wulfrunians are aiming to crank up the pressure on Midlands League title favourites Ikleston Town tomorrow.
The Premier Division leaders check in for what will be Wulfs’ final home game of the season with a three-point cushion over second-placed Walsall Wood.
And Wulfs boss Darren Goodall, who still has a sneaky feeling Walsall Wood will nick the title, is relishing the chance to tackle the table-toppers.
“It’s our last home game of the season and it’s good one to finish with,” said Goodall.
“We are really looking forward to it and hopefully we can put on a good performance and come out on the right end of the result.
“We lost 3-1 at their place but it was a much closer game than that.
“We were the better team for the first 40 minutes but didn’t take our chances.
“There is no pressure on us tomorrow and we will just approach the game the same as we have all the others this season.
“But Ttere is a lot of pressure on Ilkeston because they are a big club at this level with big crowds.
“Hopefully we can put a bit more pressure on them tomorrow and give Walsall Wood a bit of a boost. I still have a feeling Walsall Wood might sneak it.”
Goodall has enjoyed a positive first season at the helm of the Castlecroft-based club with a top 10 finish in his sights.
“I have really enjoyed it here. It’s a good club and I want to push things on next season,” he said.
“I would say it’s been a six or seven out of 10 season for us. There is definitely loads of room for improvement.
But it’s hard work at this level and you are up against some sides with big budgets.
“At one stage we went on run where we lost just one game in 16 but there were a few too many draws.
“But that shows the potential is there. We need a bit more experience and we will be trying to add that in the summer. With that we should be more competitive.
“This is a young squad and there is plenty to push on with next season. A lot of the lads will be better players due to the experience they have gained this season. I think the future looks OK.”
