Captain putts £8k into charity coffers
The outgoing captain of the Chase Golf Club ended his year in the role by presenting a cheque worth more than £8,000 to the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Alan Gilbert, from Hednesford, handed over the cheque to the charity after a series of fundraising matches, dinners and events at the club near Penkridge over the last 12 months.
The 63-year-old, who has been a member of the club for 11 years, said he believed the total of £8,282 raised was one of the record amounts presented by captains at the club.
Mr Gilbert signed off at the club’s ceremonial drive-in event on Saturday, which also welcomed new club captain Michael Maynham, before a dinner at the club in the evening. Mr Gilbert said he chose the air ambulance for his fundraising efforts after a friend was badly hurt in a cycling accident shortly before he took over as captain.
“If it wasn’t for the air ambulance, he might not have still been with us,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed my year as captain and made lots of new friends. I’d like to wish Michael all the very best for his year in the role.”
