Wolves Casuals: Dean Gill sets his sights on silverware

Dean Gill feels a top two West Midlands League Premier Division finish is beyond Wolves Casuals this season – but silverware isn’t, writes Nick Elwell.

Gill’s charges have enjoyed a superb campaign, currently sitting third in the table, and can look forward to a place in next season’s FA Cup.

They host bottom-of-the-table Pegasus tomorrow having lost just once in 19 league outings.

And while they will be going all out in a bid to win their remaining top flight games, Gill admits the big target now is the League Cup.

“I believe Tividale are home and hosed in terms of the title and I expect Haughmond to finish second,” said Gill.

“So we are battling with Malvern and Wednesfield for the rest of the places in the top five.

“We want to finish as high a s possible but the focus is on winning the League Cup.

“We have reached the semi-finals and we would love to end the season with some silverware.”

But whatever happens over the last few weeks of the season, Gill has laid the foundations for a bright future.

“There is a brand of what I call ‘West Midlands football’ that is fine for this league, but it’s not sustainable in the Midland League,” he said.

“We have seen in recent years what has happened to Shawbury, Haughmond and Wolves Sporting. They have gone up but come back down.

“We have been trying to build a side that when it goes up, will stay up.

“We have been building the side through the season. We have added six and let six go as the season has progressed.

“We had a good look at things during the first couple of months of the season and then started to change a few personnel.

“And if you look at our form since October, we have been the best side in the league.

“We have to roll that form into next season. That’s the plan.”

Tividale will be confident of taking another step towards the title when they host Dudley Sports while Wednesfield go to Cradley.

Elsewhere, Dudley Town welcome Wellington, Black Country Rangers head to Bewdley and Bilston Town host AFC Bridgnorth.
