Walsall Wood lose ground but Wolves have a Sporting chance

Walsall Wood lost ground on the Midland League Premier Division leaders after a topsy-turvy six-pointer with fellow title-hunters Westfields ended level.

Wood fell behind 22 minutes in when John Mills gave the visitors the lead, but they responded quickly and drew level 12 minutes later through Java Roberts.

Joey Butlin made it 2-1 to Walsall in the 68th minute before Sam Gwynne equalised for Westfield with 11 minutes to go.

The draw keeps second-placed Wood one point above their third-placed opponents, but they are now six behind Ilkeston Town.

The leaders brushed Sporting Khalsa aside in front of 1,022 fans, scoring three goals in 18 first-half minutes without reply.

At the other end of the table, Wolverhampton Sporting Community bounced back from shipping seven last week with a 2-1 away win at Loughborough University.

Zaman Umar gave Wolves the lead 10 minutes before half-time and then Kieran Clarke doubled their advantage from the penalty spot just before the interval.

Ben Last pulled one back for the students five minutes before the end to set up a grandstand finish but Wolves held on to their second win in four games.

That victory has given the second-bottom team an outside chance of staying up, although they are still 10 points from safety.

A Nick MacPherson goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to see Stourport Swifts beat Lye Town on their own patch.

Victory moves the Swifts above Town in the league, although both are firmly ensconced in mid-table.

AFC Wulfrunians did not play, but travel to Khalsa tonight in the third round of the JW Hunt Cup.
