The kids are all right at Old Hales

Two former England rugby stars treated youngsters at Old Halesonians to early Christmas present after the club was presented with a grassroots awards.

Old Halesonians Rugby Club celebrate being named Quilter Kids First Champions for their dedication to youth rugby

David Flatman and Danielle Waterman trained with children from under-7s up to under-13s at old Hales, who have been named Quilter Kids First Champions.

The award recognises the club’s dedication towards their youth section, which has seen an increase in girls playing from three to 55.

Waterman – who won the World Cup with England in 2014 – said: “What the coaches are doing here at Old Hales Rugby Club is fantastic.

“At this age the more fun you can introduce into training the better.

“These kids are all clearly loving their sessions and are learning the basic skills taht will set them up with a great foundation for the game.”

In addition to the training session, a group of Old Hales’ youth players will have the honour of playing at Twickenham at the end of the season.

Eight clubs are being recognised as Quiter Kids First Champions nationwide, with those selected to go to Twickenham treated as England players for the day.

Ollie Taylor, club coaching co-ordinator at Old Hales, said: “The Quilter Kids First Rugby programme has enabled our players, coaches and volunteers to enjoy everything about rugby on and off the pitch.

“We have seen some great fun and imaginative sessions taking place within age groups which are really challenging and engaging players and coaches

alike.

“It’s fantastic for our club to be recognised as a Quilter Kids First Champion and its testament to the hard work everyone involved with the club puts in.”
