Five-star Tividale are in the firing line

Tividale boss Dave King has warned his title-chasing troops that they are there to be shot at.

King saw his West Midlands League Premier Division pacesetters overcome a potentially tricky encounter with Wednesfield in fine style to extend their lead at the top to 13 points.

A 5-0 success made it 17 wins from 19 league games for Tivi but brought a warning from King that his side will have to work even harder after becoming the team everyone wants to beat.

“I was very pleased with the result and the performance because Wednesfield have been going well,” said King.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to do what we have done so far this season but there is still a long way to go.

“The pitches will start getting heavier now and we are there to be shot at. Every side will want to beat us and we have to be ready for that. We have to work harder now, on and off the pitch.”

King’s men overcame a sluggish start on Saturday with a wonder strike from Brad Welding settling them down before two further goals from Dan Smith put them in control by half-time.

Wednesfield, who dropped to eighth as a result of the loss, didn’t help themselves after the break as they shipped in two own goals and had two players sent off.

“The first 20 minutes we were a bit shaky and off the pace,” said King. “Wednesfield took advantage of that and had what I thought was a good goal disallowed.

“But then Brad scored a wonder strike to put us in front and that settled us down and we started playing.”

Despite opening up a healthy advantage in the race for glory, King is refusing to get carried away.

“Saturday’s took us to the halfway point of season but I am not setting any targets,” he said. “We didn’t do that at the start of the season and we will carry on just going game by game.”

Next up for Tividale is a League Cup clash at home to Dudley Town tomorrow night.

Second-placed Black Country Rangers added three more points to their haul thanks to a 3-1 success at home to Smethwick Rangers, while Wolverhampton Casuals are sitting fourth after beating Dudley Town 5-2.

Dudley Sports gave their bid to climb away from the relegation zone a welcome boost with a 1-0 victory at home to Bridgnorth. Cradley also tasted success, beating Shifnal Town 3-1 on home soil.
