Rugby: Wednesbury shine bright in big win

Coach Gary Summers has hailed his Wednesbury side’s ‘structured rugby’ after beating Market Drayton 51-5.

The scoreline suggests this Midlands Four West North clash was a walk in the park for Summers’ charges, but he insists it was not straightforward, writes Joe Edwards.

“The result didn’t reflect how hard that the opposition played,” he said.

“They put their bodies on the line and never rolled over.

“The fact that we played structured rugby was why the scoreboard ended up that way it did.”

Wednesbury took an early lead as Matt Dale put away a penalty.

Rhys Nickle – in his first game of the term – dived over in the corner, Dale adding the extras before a try of his own which he could not convert.

The visitors never gave in and got onto the scoresheet with a well-worked try, without a conversion.

Wednesbury soon replied though, as Dale kicked a second penalty between the posts and then got a try, and the conversion.

Lee Allwood’s try, no conversion, made it 30-5 going into the break.

Ben Baker, Allwood and Dale all crossed over in the second period – Dale converting each.

Wednesbury are top of the table, a point ahead of Eccleshall who were 45-34 victors at Bloxwich. Essington lost 37-13 at Aston Old Edwardians.

Burntwood are in fine form in Midlands Three West North.

They have won all six games, the latest being a 29-17 triumph against Handsworth.

Willenhall are having a rough time in the division, having lost five of their six games.

They were beaten 32-17 by Telford Hornets, while Cannock – who are fourth – lost 29-19 to Edwardians.

Kidderminster Carolians have dropped to the bottom of Midlands Two West North after a 26-13 defeat at the hands of Leek.

The KCs were well on top for during the opening stages and it was their failure to turn pressure into points during that period which ultimately proved to be their undoing.

Arthur Morgan got Kidder’s first try and Chris Pinner converted a penalty, to reduce the deficit after two converted tries from the visitors.

Jess Smith went over for an unconverted try towards the end, in between two Leek tries – one converted, one not.

The KCs have lost five of their six outings and a relegation fight very much appears to be on the cards.

Walsall, on the other hand, are doing well at the moment.

They are fourth and enjoyed a 38-27 success over Old Saltleians, extending their unbeaten run in the league to three games.

In Midlands Five West North, Warley slipped to 38-6 defeat at Gnosall.
