Hammerwich starting to click at last

Hammerwich skipper John Jennings hasn’t given up hope of gatecrashing the Staffs Clubs Premier Division title race.

Jennings’ side were among the pre-season favourites for promotion but a stop-start campaign to date has left sitting in mid-table.

But recent performances have suggested that the Burntwood Road outfit are starting to click into gear.

They picked up a 34-run success against Rugeley on Saturday with Jennings now looking to cash in on back-to-back games with Walsall YPF and Swindon.

“I think things are showing signs of coming together now,” said Jennings.

“The batting is starting to click now. We just need to get on a bit of a run.

“We have just had one of those seasons where a few things haven’t gone our way and we have had a few injury problems.

“But there is still a long way to go and I think most sides are capable of beating one another in this league.

“I have no concerns over the quality of the players, but for various reasons things just weren’t going for us.

“We have Walsall and Swindon in the next two games and I would like to think we can put some points on the board, and then we face Pelsall and Cannock. If we can pick up some positive results from those games, then things can change pretty quickly.”

Andy Malkin was the star performer on Saturday as he reeled off his third century of the season.

With Alistair Lawrie chipping in with 43 not out and skipper Jennings hitting 41, Hammerwich piled up 298-7.

Rugeley produced a spirited response and were going along nicely thanks to Ali Fawcett (69) and Paul McHale (62).

But the introduction of paceman Patrick Knott swung the game Hammerwich’s way as he bagged 5-28 as Rugeley fell for 264.
