Rai, from Wolverhampton, recovered from a bogey on the first hole of his third round to card an otherwise flawless day that included six birdies in his five-under-par 67.

Rock, from Armitage near Rugeley, went round the Jumeirah Golf Estates course without dropping a shot, with his four-under-par 68.

Rai goes into the final day tied for 32nd place on 10 under par while Rock is tied 44th, two shots further back.

Both are well behind leader Andy Sullivan, who consolidated his place at the top of the leaderboard with a 68.

The followed his first two rounds of 61 and 66 to put him in control at 21 under par going into the final round.

He is two shots ahead of fellow Englishman Matt Wallace, and a further shot ahead of countryman Ross Fisher, who had led after day one.

Leader Sullivan said: “I’m happy with four under,” Sullivan said. “I didn’t think I played brilliant golf.”
