Wolves blog: Fosun are bringing the excitement factor to Molineux

Wolves fans have taken their fair dose of disappointment in recent months, writes Tom Tracey.

Since the takeover, on-the-field performances haven’t lived up to what were, in fairness, massive expectations, considering new signings only started arriving a week before the season began.

Give or take a few exciting games and the FA Cup run, last season was - quite frankly - dull and uninspiring.

Like many, I welcomed the summer break from Wolves, looking forward to having a rest from the disappointments of the previous season.

After a few days, however, I was yearning for some sort of football fix – and Wolves did not disappoint.

The month of May was filled with the news Wolves were seeking a replacement for boss Paul Lambert, and this finally came to fruition with the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo on the last day of the month.

Whether you love or loathe Jorge Mendes (or anything in between), he has a part to play at Wolves and surely things will work more smoothly with one of his own clients at the helm.

Even better is a client who has been in charge of two Champions League clubs in his last jobs who has a clear idea on how he wants his team to play.

He has been allowed to bring in his own backroom staff in a complete overhaul which should freshen things up.

Nuno and his team have been followed through the door by no fewer than eight new faces.

Unlike last season’s scattergun approach to transfers, there seems to be method to the dealings, with the team being strengthened position by position.

Five new defenders have been brought in, as well as two goalkeepers (following the sad news about Carl Ikeme).

In Ruben Neves, Wolves have brought in someone to oil the machine, meaning the most important part of Wolves’ remaining transfer dealings now lie in the attacking positions.

When the news about Wolves being after Neves appeared, a common question that appeared was, ‘why is he going to Wolves?’

Make no mistake, Wolves have signed a player we would never have a chance to sign normally – but factors have allowed Wolves to make a gigantic statement of intent.

In three consecutive transfer windows, Wolves have broken their own transfer record.

The signing of Ivan Cavaleiro on deadline day last summer was exciting, matching or eclipsing the fees paid for Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher.

After we were told by Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell Wolves have little chance of signing Helder Costa, circumstances changed and Wolves’ first ever eight-figure sum was spent for the star winger in January.

To sign a player of Neves’ ilk is the icing on the cake and one that has caused most excitement for Wolves fans so far this summer.

It isn’t just on the field that improvements have been made – look at what the club is doing off it.

Could there be more twists to come from the likes of Shi, Dalrymple and Thelwell? (AMA)

Jeff Shi has relocated to the area, which shows he is dedicated and will more attentively keep Fosun’s ear to the ground.

A new state-of-the-art pitch has been installed, new screens are being put in place after years of fans crying out for them.

The South Bank is already sold out for the first game of the season following a superb ticket incentive, as well as a high number of season tickets being purchased compared to recent seasons.

Even the match day programmes are more exciting – following last season’s incredible artwork, club stalwart Jody Craddock has been commissioned to provide next season’s front covers.

The key word throughout all levels at the club right now is optimism.

Within a year of Fosun taking over Wolves, so many changes have been made, making many parts of the club unrecognisable.

What was once a fantasy is now considered a possible reality.
