Arriving as a 16-year-old from Swiss side Grasshoppers, the defender was the most expensive academy signing in the club’s history and had been courted by both Benfica and Bayern Munich, before Wolves swooped in.

Wolves’ scouts were excited about bringing in a centre-back they felt could go on to play for the first team and beyond.

He was earmarked as a perfect player for the ‘Conor Coady role’ in the middle of a back three – and quickly became part of the senior group under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Four years later and without a senior Wolves appearance to his name, Marques left Wolves this summer to return to Switzerland with top-flight side Yverdon Sport.

“I still had a contract until 2025 and I was always planning to go on loan, but the decision I had to make was whether I wanted to go on loan for one season and then come back, or do I want to go somewhere permanently and try to settle before making the next step again,” Marques told the Express & Star.

“That was the decision I had to make and for myself, and the club, I think it was the best decision. I’m happy we did it and happy to be here.

“It was a difficult decision because I’ve been there from 16-20 and Wolves opened my eyes to football.

“I enjoyed the football and I can’t argue with anything about the club. For me, it was perfect. The only thing missing was having at least one game with the first team, but that’s how football works.
