After being left on the bench as an unused substitute against Luton, Silva was expected to start the Carabao Cup clash with Ipswich on Tuesday night, but he was again benched.

O’Neil brought 18-year-old striker Nathan Fraser on ahead of Silva at Portman Road, before eventually giving the Portuguese striker a chance, and the head coach has now challenged him to fight his way back into the team.

“He needs to work extremely hard, as a lot of them do,” O’Neil said.

“As I speak about things around the club that need to improve, Fabio knows. I’ve spoken to him very clearly around where we want to get him to, what I want to help him with.

“We’ll get to work with him and try to make sure he’s in a place to affect Premier League games.
