Liam Keen comment: Gary O'Neil unveiled and looking for positive Wolves approach

It was less of an unveiling and more of a standard press conference yesterday, as Wolves took a low-key approach to the new head coach’s first days in the job.

O’Neil only took charge of his first training session on Thursday and sat down for his obligatory broadcast interviews, before yesterday being put in front of his first press conference as Wolves boss.

Arriving at the interview room at Compton, O’Neil cut a confident, measured and organised character who is ready to take the big opportunity in front him.

He was vague with certain answers at times, as many managers are, but was polite, concise and clear in his message.

Do not expect to jump off your seat with press conference answers in future, but all fans want is honesty and he did his best to answers questions after such a short time at the helm.

The task ahead of him is a now a great one, with Wolves desperate for a reaction on the field.

O’Neil will have certainly done his research on the squad, their pre-season results and performances, and looked ahead to the conundrum of Manchester United on Monday to prepare himself for the mammoth job on his hands.

Getting the players on side will have been his first port of call in the last two days, in an effort to motivate them ahead of the trip to Old Trafford.

Now, O’Neil’s messages to supporters must be made with the purpose of bringing them on board.

Wolves fans always travel in good numbers and make a good atmosphere – and Monday night will be no different – but O’Neil and his side need to give them a reason to cheer.

O’Neil said: “I’m really excited. It’s a fantastic club to come and work at and the first two days have been fantastic.

“There’s been real good support from everybody, it’s an incredible place. Even bumping into supporters, having chats around what their expectations are, how much they love the club and what it means to them. I’m starting to get a good feel for the place.
