Nuno: Attitude not the issue in Wolves defeat
Nuno Espirito Santo insists Wolves' dreadful 4-0 home loss to Burnley had 'nothing to do with attitude' – but was about poor decision-making.
A disastrous defensive display from Nuno's side saw Chris Wood grab a hat-trick for the visitors before setting up Ashley Westwood to complete the rout.
It was their worst performance of a difficult 2020/21 campaign, having been outfought and outclassed by Sean Dyche's men, but Nuno refused to question the commitment of his players afterwards.
"I will not go by mentality or character. We are the same group of players, the same staff, from one week ago," he said.
"It's not about that. It's about not taking the right decisions.
"It's nothing to do with the attitude. The longer game goes on, of course, mistakes increased.
"We were not able to settle down and play the game like we should play.
"This was clearly the path we should not take. I will not allow it."
Having struggled against Wood in the past, Wolves played into the former Albion man's hands as he netted a first-half treble.
The hosts were also toothless in attack throughout, with Westwood rubbing salt into the wounds late on.
On if he was especially disappointed with how they failed to cope with Wood, Nuno said: "I'm disappointed with many things, on the defensive part and offensive part.
"We didn't have the movement. Everybody was without mobility. This is what we wanted to build, and we didn't do it.
"It disappoints me more than surprises me, and makes me think how we should regain being compact and solid.
"We'd been able to do it in the previous games. But it was not the case. It was a really disappointing defensive performance.
"We played bad. We had a very bad performance. It's hard to explain, but bad defending and not the right decisions when we were under pressure.
"Burnley always pressed us. We didn't have movement to go out of that pressure.
"Then, we defended very bad every time that we had to defend an attack.
"But I will not judge the attitude of my players."
Nuno, whose side face fierce rivals Albion next, added on the horror show: "It was a tough day. When you perform so bad, you are disappointed and frustrated.
"We did many mistakes we shouldn't do. So, we have to refocus, get together again and approach it together for the next one.
"We'll speak to each other, look ourselves in the face and realise we made mistakes. We will stick together, like we always do."
