The 23-year-old midfielder could only witness his son, Mateo, being born via video call last Saturday, with his partner back in Portugal.

Neves, on Tuesday, then scored in a 2-1 victory over Arsenal and dedicated the penalty to his baby boy, who he is yet to meet in person.

On the dedication his vice-captain has shown, Nuno – whose side host Leicester on Sunday – said: “You know what happened with Ruben, and he shows us and everybody he is truly committed.

“He understands that in this moment he is not able to travel.

“What is important is our job, this is what we should realise. We are fortunate enough to still do our job and many people are not.

“This is the spirit of the team and of Ruben. I am very proud of the way he has handled the situation.

“The commitment that he put into the situation – not ever doubting – is what makes me more proud. Now, in these moments, the team needs the best of each one of us, in every moment of every day.

“Ruben joined us four seasons ago, came from a big club, and from that day he has totally embraced the challenge.

“It’s not only about the birth of his child. It’s every day, since 2017.”

Nuno believes his other players would show the same commitment as Neves if the situation arose as well.

“I’m totally confident it would happen with all of our players in the squad,” he added.

“We are really committed, aware of the situation we are in and issues we have. So, I’m truly positive no matter which player finds themselves in this type of circumstances, the decision would be the same.”
