Wolves chief Nuno: Football won't be the same if season is paused

Fixtures across the top flight have had to be postponed and rearranged in recent weeks as Covid-19 continues to spread at a rapid rate.

It has led to talk of a break in the 2020/21 campaign but Nuno, whose side host Everton tomorrow (8.15pm), fears a 'new football will come' if that happens – particularly with the Euros due to take place, a year later than planned, this summer.

"If we stop, everything will change," said the Portuguese.

"A new football will come. Probably with a Super League, or with other competitions. It'll be a matter of which clubs will survive.

"It's a tough decision to make. What I'm afraid of is the decision to stop and football we know now will not be the same. This is my biggest fear.

"The schedule will go crazy and it'll be impossible to even finish the league and think about the Euros. If you stop for x weeks, you need x weeks to restart.

"I'm really concerned we cannot move forward and go back to a normal situation. The virus and pandemic is affecting things a lot, the increase of cases is growing in a scary way. This is what my main concern is.

"With regards to football, things have changed. Almost a year ago we were stopping because we didn't know what was happening. The virus was something we hadn't experienced. There were lots of doubts.

"After the restart, there were protocols, meetings, things exchanged, we were sure no matter what we were playing because we only need 14 players. Now things have changed and we are starting to think about stopping again.

"Giving up now will have a big impact on the future, for sure.

"My personal view, when I have an awareness of what's going around, probably you will not find the same model we are now."

Nuno hopes that league chiefs – along with health experts, media and fans – can have discussions soon and come to a 'good decision'.

"Hopefully, sooner than later, we can have a meeting with all sectors of the game involved," he added.
