Nuno claimed referee Mason 'does not have the quality to whistle in the Premier League' following the 2-1 defeat at Turf Moor.

The Portuguese was contacted by the FA last week to explain his outburst and has now been charged, having until Tuesday to respond.

An FA statement read: "Wolves' Nuno Espirito Santo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to their Premier League match against Burnley FC on Monday 21 December 2020.

"It is alleged that comments made by the head coach during a post-match interview constitute improper conduct as they were personally offensive to the match official and/or bring the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1.

"Nuno Espirito Santo has until Tuesday 5 January 2021 to provide a response to the charge."

In the days after the loss to Burnley, Nuno apologised for the timing of his comments – but stuck by what he said about Mason.

"I should apologise, first of all, for the timing of my comments. They probably were not in the best moment," said Nuno.

"I will apologise on my timing, but I will not apologise on my words and my thoughts."
