Andy Thompson: Conor Coady England call-ups long overdue
Former Wolves star Andy Thompson has heaped praise on skipper Conor Coady after earning back-to-back England call-ups.
The 27-year-old was finally selected his first senior international cap last month as Gareth Southgate’s side drew 0-0 in Denmark.
Coady became the first gold and black star to feature for the Three Lions since Matt Jarvis in 2011, and the first to start since Steve Bull in 1990.
Coady also became the 36th Molineux man to play for England.
Now, the defender has earned his second successive call-up after impressing Southgate last time out and former Wolves man Thompson believes Coady deserves the international recognition.
“It’s long overdue, with the way he has performed for Wolves,” he said.
“He’s had to bide his time and at 27, he might have thought it wasn’t going to come. But he’s kept his head down, played well for Wolves, and got his reward.
“He deserves everything that comes with it, it was great to see him start.”
It was an unconvincing performance from England overall, but Coady put in a solid display at the heart of a back three.
After months without a call-up, Coady now has two on the spin and Thompson added: “His performances at club level have warranted an inclusion.
“He’s been outstanding ever since he’s been in the Premier League – after getting the Championship promotion. He deserves it.”
