The Joe Edwards debrief – Wolves 2 Crystal Palace 0
Wolves’ much-needed win against Crystal Palace means their destiny is in their own hands heading into the final day of the season.
If they win at Chelsea, they will be in the Europa League again.
Clear improvement
First things first, what an effort it has been to get to this point.
This clash with Palace was Wolves’ 56th game of a season that began all the way back on July 25 last year. And with one massive league outing left, they have beaten last term’s Premier League points total.
Of course, there is still a lot to be done on Sunday, but whatever the outcome, Nuno Espirito Santo’s charges have got better – the numbers prove it. The Portuguese said afterwards his players have ‘clearly improved’, and he is right.
Sitting sixth in the table on 59 points – despite the 15 extra matches which have come as they have thrived in Europe – is nothing short of amazing.
This game was not exactly awe-inspiring, but Wolves got just what they wanted from it. They have previously struggled in matches similar to this – being held to frustrating draws when expected to win – but now, they tend to come out on top when they really should.
The progress is there for all to see. Fosun, for whom today marked four years since taking over the club, must be very proud of Nuno & Co.
Masterful Moutinho
Focusing more on the game itself, a piece of Joao Moutinho magic was what brought it to life for Wolves.
It was an utterly gorgeous chip from the Portuguese, spotting the well-timed run of Matt Doherty, who then laid it on a plate for Daniel Podence – the smallest man on the pitch – to head home.
Having looked a bit tired since the restart, and understandably so considering he has played more games than anyone in Europe this campaign ahead of turning 34 in September, Moutinho gave us a lovely reminder of his prowess.
He truly is one of a kind. Yes, Ruben Neves has been outstanding in recent weeks, but that was a trademark Moutinho pass. There is plenty of life in him yet.
Daniel’s delights
Podence has been a breath of fresh air, hasn’t he?
Wolves were doing superbly anyway, but the January buy has brought some more sparkle over the past few games.
Having started the last three, he has obviously pleased Nuno with his performances and has every chance of being in from the off against Chelsea, too.
We had waited a long while to see him, but it was worth it. He has adjusted seamlessly.
One last push
So, it promises to be a dramatic day in London.
Wolves, on the whole, deserve a European spot for their work this season. They have relished playing two games a week for most of the campaign and taken on all comers.
Winning at Chelsea is no small feat, but if anyone can do it, it’s Nuno’s lot. They have a very good record in the capital, too. Fingers crossed.
