Wolves drew the first leg of their last-16 tie 1-1 in Athens, having failed in an appeal to UEFA for the match to be postponed, after Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis revealed he had contracted coronavirus.

The match was already due to be played behind closed doors following an order from the Greek government.

In a statement on the club’s website, Shi claimed the fixture was one ‘none of us felt was appropriate to play’.

He continued: “Our staff and players showed great professionalism and dedication to take to the field in a stadium devoid of atmosphere, in a continent gripped with anxiety, and still deliver a performance and positive result.

“Of course, we took all appropriate measures to ensure that the staff and players who travelled were protected where possible from the threat of contracting coronavirus, and we will continue to keep improving these measures all the time to help them remain safe and healthy.”

This week’s scheduled second leg was then postponed just hours after the match at the Karaiskakis Stadium had finished, with Uefa set to meet and discuss the continuation of the Europa League tomorrow.
