Ex-Wolves midfielder Carl Robinson takes Newcastle Jets role Down Under
Former Wolves and Walsall midfielder Carl Robinson has been appointed the new head coach of Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets.
Robinson, 43, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal until the end of the 2022-23 season.
He made more than 160 appearances for Wolves between 1995 and 2002, having progressed from the youth ranks at Molineux.
"I am thrilled to be taking charge of the Jets," Robinson told the official club website.
"Everything I have seen about the club so far has been top class, they are desperate for success and hopefully, we can achieve that together.
"The opportunity was too good to turn down. I am really looking forward to finalising my coaching staff, rolling our sleeves up and getting to work."
The former international player won 52 caps for Wales in a 16-year playing career before moving into coaching.
Robinson became head coach of Vancouver Whitecaps in December 2013 and steered the Canadian club to three MLS play-off appearances and the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
He was linked to the Wales job two years ago before Ryan Giggs was appointed national-team manager.
Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna said: "Carl's name was one of the first ones that came up when we were considering who we would want as the new head coach.
"He's an experienced coach with a good understanding of the Hyundai A-League, and he knows how to work within a salary cap due to his MLS experience which is crucial for us."
Robinson will arrive in Australia ahead of the Jets' weekend game with the Central Coast Mariners, before officially taking charge on Monday.
