Midfield maestros

Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho did well against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges, with the former the star man as he earned the supporters’ man-of-the-match award.

Former United man Gary Neville, meanwhile, waxed lyrical about him on TV for an all-action performance.

Midfield partner Moutinho put in a shift next to him as well, making five successful tackles and having a pass success rate of 90 per cent.

Neves – who was not dispossessed once – made three tackles and had a pass success rate of 82 per cent, while both of them got booked and Moutinho took all six of Wolves’ corners.

Bruno Fernandes – United’s marquee signing – has earned some praise for his display on his debut.

But Neves – who also managed to make three interceptions – outshone him, and the stats show that Moutinho did too.

Fernandes, ultimately, was the third-best Portuguese midfielder on the pitch.

Jonny be tough

Jonny Castro Otto was not that effective for Wolves going forward.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – who was probably United’s best player on the day – nullified the threat of the Spaniard.

Otto, though, did excel with his tackling at Old Trafford. His nine successful tackles saw him win the ball back more than anyone else on the pitch – Wan-Bissaka coming second with seven.

Matt Doherty made two on the opposite flank to Otto.

Less possession

The match, as a whole, was pretty even and a draw a fair result.

And there was not much between most of the team stats, with United having 16 shots to Wolves’ 14, the hosts having four corners to the visitors’ six, while David De Ga made three saves to Rui Patricio’s five.

But the one with a fairly big difference was possession, with United having 64 per cent – or 851 touches to Wolves’ 575.

It just goes to show that possession is not everything, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s lot robust at the back.

Efficient substitutes

Pedro Neto may have felt hard done by to have not started at United, with Diogo Jota – back from a calf injury – taking his place on the left of the front three.

Neto did well as a substitute, not giving the ball away once. The 19-year-old made 14 passes and all of them reached their target.

Daniel Podence had a 100 per cent pass success rate, along with Pedro Neto (AMA)

Fellow sub Daniel Podence also made the same amount of passes, and all of them were successful too.

The Portuguese pair were threatening, and yet not wasteful, when they raced down the flanks.
