Cutrone was pulled out of the squad at Anfield late on, with Oskar Buur taking his place on the bench.

The reason given for the former AC Milan man not being on the bench was him feeling unwell.

But asked about it post-match, Nuno stated it was for tactical reasons and that Matt Doherty, not Buur, was on the bench instead of Cutrone.

"It was something we decided. We decided to have Matt Doherty with us on the bench," said Nuno.

"It was just to have different options on the bench."

Cutrone – a £16million summer signing from Milan – has been linked with a move back to Italy when the transfer window reopens.

Italian media have reported the 21-year-old is open to a move to Fiorentina.

Nuno did not wish to address the striker's future.

The Wolves chief, though, was the delighted with his side's performance in defeat to Liverpool, where VAR took centre stage.

"In terms of performance, we did very well," said Nuno.

"We didn't start the game very well, but we were in control, knowing we were playing against a fantastic team with amazing players.

"We were able to control that and in the second half, we dominated certain moments of the game.

"It is hard, but the way the players did it – creating chances – is the work we have to do.

"This display of energy makes us very proud, of course."

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp became the latest big-name manager to heap praise on Wolves, too.

Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola have had kinds words for Nuno's side in recent weeks, and the German said: "Wolves are a proper, proper team.

"They have a lot of strength. In the first half, we controlled the game as we wanted.

"We had chances, scored the goal an then we had to defend.

"Their counter-attacking threat is massive.

"They have (Pedro) Neto and (Diogo) Jota on their bikes immediately.

"We defended it well, and then we scored the goal.

"Nuno was not happy with the VAR procedure. It took a while.

"Their goal didn't count, obviously, but the momentum was on their side.

"They were really aggressive, so they came out of the dressing room and pressed us a bit higher.

"We were not fresh enough in mind to adapt that to immediately, and that caused us some problems."

Klopp added: "We had to calm everything down and then they made changes and had fresh legs.

"Alisson had to make a save or two. It is not easy. You have to fight."
