The Spaniard won just four of his 15 matches at the helm.

Sunday’s 2-0 La Liga defeat at second-bottom Leganes left Espanyol rooted to the foot of the table, five points from safety.

Wolves face them across two legs in late February.

A statement on their official website read: "The club has taken this decision as a result of the team's performance and with the clear desire to change the team's situation in La Liga.

"Espanyol thanks Pablo Machin and his technical staff for their involvement during these months of work and wishes them every personal and professional success."
