Wolves 1 Tottenham 2 – What the stats reveal

Wolves put in a top performance despite the unbeaten run coming to an end against Tottenham.

Here, we look at what the stats from whoscored.com – specialists in the in-depth analysis of detailed football data – show.

Traore on top form

We already knew how great Adama Traore was against Jose Mourinho’s men, but the stats further emphasise his impact.

Aside from his stunning strike, which was his first goal at Molineux, wing-wizard Traore attempted five dribbles – and all of them were successful.

All three of his shots were on target as well, and he saw the most of the ball of Wolves’ front three.

The Spaniard was at the heart of the action throughout and given some rough treatment by Spurs, who made 10 fouls in total.

Wolves, thanks in no small part to the whistle-happy referee Stuart Attwell, made more fouls than the visitors, though, with 14.

Patricio’s distribution

Having highlighted it in my analysis of the game, the stats prove Rui Patricio’s kicking was below-par.

Only nine of the 22 passes attempted by the Portuguese reached their target, giving him a pass success rate of 41 per cent.

That was the lowest of anyone on the pitch.

Wolves’ most accurate passer was Diogo Jota, with an impressive 91 per cent.

Joao Moutinho and Jonny Castro were joint-second, with 85 per cent.

Double the shots

Wolves, although they lost 2-1, had twice the amount of shots than Tottenham. The hosts had 18, and the visitors nine.

Raul Jimenez had the most, with five, but only one was on target – a long-range strike forcing Spurs’ Paulo Gazzaniga into making a sharp save in the second half.

Jota had four as well, but none of them tested Gazzaniga, so more ruthlessness is needed against Norwich on Saturday.

Magnificent Moutinho

Similarly to Traore, Moutinho’s excellence was clear to see.

But the data displays just how much of an influence he had.

The 33-year-old enjoyed 8.6 per cent of the overall possession, which was the most of any player by a fair distance on Sunday – Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Moutinho’s midfield partner Ruben Neves then tied on 6.6 per cent.

Moutinho also made three successful tackles, while the booking he picked up for tripping Heung-Min Son was pretty harsh – considering it was the only foul he made all afternoon.

Showing how much on the front foot Wolves were for large spells too, he took 11 corners. It was not to be for Wolves, but they will bounce back.
