Besiktas v Wolves: Black Eagles' home is a fearsome fortress

Although, like Wolves, Besiktas have made a slow start to their league season, there is no disputing their home remains a fortress.

Abdullah Avci’s side find themselves in the Turkish Super Lig relegation zone after picking up five points from their first six games.

But they are unbeaten from three games at Vodafone Park this term – beating Goztepe 3-0 and drawing 1-1 with Rizespor and Istanbul Basaksehir.

So, why are they so strong on their own patch?

Well, much has been made about the deafening noise their rabid supporters produce.

Ralph Hasenhuttl, who now manages Wolves’ Premier League rivals Southampton, took RB Leipzig there in 2017 in the Champions League.

And this side felt the full force of the raucous atmosphere in a 2-0 defeat.

“It is impossible to prepare your team for an atmosphere like this,” said Hasenhuttl.

“There was a deafening noise (and) at the start of the game we were a bit affected.

“I congratulate Besiktas and they got a deserved win.”

You often hear managers stress the importance of the 12th man – and Besiktas may have the most effective one around.

Since the Uefa Cup’s rebranding as the Europa League in 2009, they have also won all three of their home matches against English opposition – beating Stoke City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

They were all before the club moved to Vodafone Park in 2016.

The avid Besiktas faithful, though, very much remains.

They are just in a nicer ground – a 40,000-seater which cost around £100million to construct – so it will be tough for Wolves, no doubt.

The stadium also played host to the Uefa Super Cup final back in August between Liverpool and Chelsea, which the Reds won 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Player-wise, there are some familiar faces.

Loris Karius – famed for his big-time blunder for Liverpool in the Champions League final a couple of seasons ago – plays in goal for them.

He has still got a rick in him too, having gifted a goal to Slovan Bratislava last time out in the Europa League.

Mohamed Elneny is also on loan there, from Arsenal.

Georges-Kevin Nkoudou joined them on a permanent deal from Tottenham in the summer as well.

Douglas was a Benfica team-mate of Wolves striker Raul Jimenez in 2017/18.

Their boss, Avci, took charge in the summer, replacing Senol Gunes who had left to take charge of the Turkish national side.

Avci moved across the city having just led Basaksehir to a runners-up spot in the Super Lig.
