The Wolves players set to be off around the world

Wolves’ season is over, but a lot of Nuno Espirito Santo’s stars are not able to rest for long.

A packed international programme is running through the next couple of months, and from the Africa Cup of Nations to the Under-20 World Cup, there should be Wolves involvement.

So, let’s take a look at who seem set to be in for a busy summer with their countries.

Rui Patricio, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota – Portugal (Nations League)

Portugal host the Nations League finals – a four-team knockout tournament also involving England, Switzerland and the Netherlands – from Wednesday, June 5, until Saturday, June 9.

They are facing Switzerland (7.45pm UK) on the Wednesday, and then either playing the final or the third/fourth place play-off on the Saturday.

Patricio has long been the first-choice shot-stopper for Portugal – the reigning European champions – so is a shoo-in for the tournament, while playmaker Moutinho has been a mainstay for the past decade, picking up 114 caps.

Neves is also expected to be involved as he has been in included in the last few squads.

Ruben Neves has played 10 times for Portugal (AMA)

Jota’s stellar end to the campaign for Wolves may be enough to earn a first senior cap.

Helder Costa made his Portugal bow last year, and Ivan Cavaleiro has played for them too, but it would be a surprise to see either of them included after their struggle to shine for Wolves.

Raul Jimenez – Mexico (Gold Cup)

The Gold Cup – the tournament to determine the champion of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean – starts next month, and Jimenez is likely to be leading the line for Mexico.

Javier Hernandez is not thought to be taking part as he is expecting his first child. Hirving Lozano is carrying a knee injury and Carlos Vela has not been involved in Tata Martino’s previous squads.

That means Jimenez is one of the biggest names available to Mexico – and if they go all the way, the final is on July 7.

Wolves begin the Premier League Asia Trophy in China 10 days later.

Romain Saiss – Morocco (Africa Cup of Nations)

Someone who could well miss Wolves’ trip to China entirely is Saiss if Morocco are successful in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament in Egypt runs from June 21 until July 19, and Saiss has been a regular for Herve Renard’s team – featuring in last summer’s World Cup.

Morocco are fifth favourites to win it with the bookies, so the 29-year-old midfielder-or-defender may well have to put in more yards on top of his 26 games across all competitions for Wolves this term just gone.

Matt Doherty, Leander Dendoncker and Jonny Castro Otto – Ireland, Belgium and Spain (Euro 2020 qualifiers)

For those not in the Nations League finals, there are Euro qualifiers and Doherty is set to to be involved in games against Denmark and Gibraltar for Mick McCarthy’s Ireland next month.

Doherty's due to go away with Ireland (AMA)

Dendoncker should face Kazakhstan and Scotland after impressing in the previous international break, while Otto could make the Spain squad for games against the Faroe Islands and Sweden having been capped three times.

Ruben Vinagre – Portugal (Under-20 World Cup)

The biennial championship is being held in Poland, and the wing-back has been named in Portugal’s squad.

It runs from May 23 until June 15, and Vinagre would love to cap off what has been a solid first season in the top flight with Wolves by grabbing some silverware with his country.

Morgan Gibbs-White – England (Under-21 Euro Championship)

Gibbs-White has never played for the under-21s, but chief Aidy Boothroyd is a big fan.

Boothroyd said recently on whether Gibbs-White could feature in the tournament in Italy and San Marino: “Absolutely, if he keeps doing what he’s doing.”
