Preview: Wolves not worried about Liverpool's title tilt
Liverpool’s comeback victory over Barcelona on Tuesday night to get to the Champions League final was incredible.
Reds fans across the globe were ever so proud, and it brought a smile to many football followers – one of them being Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
Sat in front of the TV, Nuno did not use it as a means to prepare for what Wolves will face on a big season-ending occasion at Anfield tomorrow.
He just enjoyed it for what it was – amazing.
“When you watch a game on TV, you don’t watch it as a manager,” said Nuno when asked if he tuned in to see the Reds come back from 3-0 down to win the semi-final 4-3 on aggregate.
“You watch it as a fan of the game. When you work, you work with other tools – not seeing the game on TV.
“I watch all the games. I enjoy football. Who doesn’t enjoy the game? It’s fantastic. Amazing.”
But that does not mean Wolves have left any stones unturned in their preparation
Liverpool, of course, could be lifting the Premier League trophy come 5pm tomorrow – or Wolves could end up spoiling the party.
For Nuno, who has overseen a victory and a defeat against the Reds already this term, the focus is on treating this test like any other.
“We don’t think about (spoiling things for Liverpool). We prepare ourselves for the game like we always have in the two years I’ve been here,” he said.
“There is no exception. It doesn’t change, and we’re not going to change for the last game of the season.
“The players are aware of the game, and they want to compete.
“But it’s always been our idea (to focus on the game in the same way). What happens inside the pitch you can control, outside you cannot.”
An on-pitch worry for Wolves, who already know they will finish seventh, will be the sensational duo that is Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
“As a team – compact, hard work. Playing as a team,” said Nuno on stopping the ‘extremely good’ pair.
Things could come full circle for one Wolves player in wing-back Matt Doherty, who made his debut for the club at Anfield in 2012.
And Nuno, although stressing ‘maybe he doesn’t play’, said: “Matt is one of the players who has been here longer. I think his development, not only this season. has been excellent.
“But he is aware of the tough challenges ahead.
“He always wants to improve himself, and that is good.”
So, Wolves – after Manchester City secured seventh for Nuno’s side by beating Leicester on Monday – could return the favour to the Pep Guardiola’s men and make sure the Citizens retain the crown.
But could Wolves be vying for the title as part of Fosun’s grand ambition in the future?
“Ask them. I’m focused on a day-by-day process,” added Nuno.
