Steve Bull: Nine points will give Wolves seventh spot

I thought we looked very lethargic against Southampton, it was an end-of-season game and the boys played like it was all over.

From a defensive point of view that’s as bad as they’ve been all season – the defenders made plenty of uncharacteristic mistakes.

The semi-final defeat will have taken its toll. Yes they’re professionals but it’s understandable that a defeat like that will knock the stuffing out of them, they’re human and it’s hard to erase these things from your mind.

Southampton got the early goal which didn’t help and although we got it back to 1-1 we then let it slip straight away again and we never looked like winning from then onwards.

It’s been a long, hard season and they’ve produced a monumental effort to win games recently, especially the two Manchester United victories.

Let’s hope a few days in Marbella with the sun on their back has done them some good and they’ve snapped out of it, because there’s a lot to play for in the final five games.

Personally, I think nine points from the final five games will be enough to finish seventh, especially if one of those wins comes at Watford on April 27.

Brighton arrive at Molineux on Saturday in terrible form having lost 5-0 and 2-0 at home to Bournemouth and Cardiff – they’re in freefall and it’s up to us to take advantage of that.

We’ve struggled against teams at the lower end of the table but we’ve got a great record at Molineux this year and the key will be setting the tempo early on, playing our game and not letting Brighton dictate it.

It’ll be interesting to see if he goes with the same team again. Ryan Bennett had formed a solid trio with Conor Coady and Willy Boly. No disrespect to Romain Saiss, who’s done a great job at times, but after shipping six goals in two games, Nuno may shuffle his pack.

The FA Cup has gone, let’s forget all about that, finish seventh, end the season on a high and we’ll see if that’s good enough for Europe.

It’s been a fantastic season, so let’s finish it on a positive note.
