Wolves were two up in the semi-final against Watford, through Matt Doherty and Raul Jimenez, but conceded a last-gasp penalty which Troy Deeney converted to take it to extra-time at Wembley.

They then lost in extra-time as substitute Gerard Deulofeu completed a double for the Hornets, breaking Wolves hearts.

"We're disappointed, sad – we are, the players are, the fans are," said Nuno.

"It is a very tough moment. A moment of real pain and disappointment.

"The feeling that we have is that we had it.

"But it went away from us. We've got to look at it.

"We have to realise in the last minutes of the game we should manage it better."

Wolves were on the brink of their first final appearance since 1960, but Leander Dendoncker tripped Deeney as he tried to get on the end of a cross in added-on time and momentum shifted.

On the penalty decision and video assistant referee technology (VAR), Nuno said: "It's VAR and they judge the situation, they see the images.

"If VAR judge, I trust them."

Nuno admitted there was silence among the players in the dressing room afterwards - but still pride over the journey they have had in the competition.

Wolves beat Liverpool, Shrewsbury Town (with a replay), Bristol City and Manchester United before the Hornets' comeback victory.

"It's disappointment. It's pain. You are not happy," added Nuno on the feeling among the players.

"There's silence, of course. But at the same time unity, over all that we've done in this competition.

"The tough ties we had to reach Wembley made us proud.

"Now, it's over. We face it like a group of players and coaches and fans.

"We're disappointed, but there's still a long way to go (in the Premier League)."
