Wolves legend Steve Bull: Sometimes you’ve got to win ugly

It wasn’t an amazing performance or game at Bristol City – but at this stage of the FA Cup, winning is all that matters.

Nuno may not have enjoyed the performance that much, but the win is all that mattered against Bristol City.

It was a classic game of two halves. We played some good stuff early on, Joao Moutinho absolutely ran the show and we looked like the Premier League team.

In the second half we played like strangers at times. They came at us strong, we had to ride our luck a little bit and see the bombardment through.

Sometimes you’ve got to win ugly and our battling qualities shone though. The players were chucking themselves at the ball.

John Ruddy was solid between the sticks after his mistake against Shrewsbury in the last round and that was great to see.

He came in from the cold and it can be hard to grasp the pace of the game. Ruddy has his doubters but he did himself justice.

It’s been a great run to the quarter-finals and it must be as thrilling for the players as it is for the fans.

Having been involved in a few Cup runs myself, they breed confidence in the squad.

It helps bond you as a team and adds momentum and a feelgood factor to the dressing room.

We’re unbeaten in all competitions for the past seven games – you can see how confident the players are when they cross that white line.

It’ll be Manchester United next in the quarter-finals. What a mouth-watering tie that is – Molineux will be absolutely bouncing for that one.

We’ll be the underdogs but it’s definitely better to play them on our own turf that it would be at Wembley in a semi-final.

If you want to win the competition – and at this stage everyone is in it to win it – you’ve got to beat the best teams, so bring it on.

I was rooting for us to be drawn against Millwall at home but so be it! We’ve done really well to get to the quarters so let’s go out and enjoy a fantastic occasion.

Before that there are some important league games coming up. It’s such an exciting time for the club, long may it continue.
