Nuno sticks to tried and tested Wolves approach

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is not dwelling on their very respectable record against the Premier League’s top teams – because he treats every opponent the same.

Nuno’s side pulled off a fantastic 3-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday, to add to a memorable victory against Chelsea and draws with Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

They have also given a good account of themselves in defeats to Spurs and Liverpool at Molineux this season, but when asked if their results against the big-hitters mean they are making ground on them, Nuno said: “No.

“What we try, for every game, is that our approach is the same.

“The opponent doesn’t mean anything regarding our approach.

“But we lost points against some other teams. We have to go game by game.

“For me, (the record) is not an issue. It’s nothing that I hold on to. For all the opponents, we take the same care and try to do the same things.”

Wolves’ triumph at Wembley means they are set to end 2018 in the top half of the top flight.

Results and performances so far have got a fair few thinking about a push for a European spot – particularly finishing seventh, as Burnley did last campaign.

But Nuno kept his cards close to his chest over what the aim is now for his charges.

“We can achieve a good training session tomorrow, knowing Crystal Palace is on Wednesday,” he said.

“In this tight schedule, you know that anything can happen.

“We have to be ready and prepare ourselves for Wednesday.”

A key feature of Nuno’s philosophy of treating every opponent the same is that they do not fear the elite teams.

After Willy Boly cancelled out Harry Kane’s opener at Wembley, Wolves could have sat back in hope of sealing a point.

But, having brought Helder Costa on for Adama Traore, who picked up a knock, which Nuno said afterwards he did not think was serious, and Joao Moutinho for Leander Dendoncker, they went on the front foot.

Teenage playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White also entered the fray before Costa capped off a superb end to an unforgettable year, grabbing his first league goal of the term.

On Wolves’ fearlessness, Nuno added: “If you asked me at the beginning of the game, I would have said (yes to) a draw.

“We had a big challenge ahead of us, Tottenham in fantastic momentum.

“We’ve spoken before about what they’ve achieved in previous games. We knew the task we had ahead of us.

“But when the team achieved the draw, I felt, and everybody felt, we could keep on going.

“The spaces were there. We had the ball, and when you have more of the ball, you can change the reality of the game.

“Being brave is important in these kinds of situations.”
