The wing-back arrived at Molineux in 2010, but is one of the few pre-Nuno players who the manager has kept firmly in his plans.

Doherty has enjoyed a stellar start to the season where he has a won the PFA’s Player of the Month award for September, while scoring one goal and creating two assists.

“Yes it is massively a source of pride for me (that I have remained at the forefront),” said Doherty. “A lot of managers, obviously new owners, they could have just wiped me out and said ‘We are going to go for something new’.

“But I have just got my head down and done well, played well when I needed to, and I am still here. A lot has happened since the manager took over, which is only just over a year ago.

“He has done an unbelievable job to get us where we are today. A lot of credit goes to him. And (as a player you have to) just go with the flow and keeping doing your bit to make sure you stay here. (You are always) trying to keep your place, you want to be part of it.”

Doherty has started every game of the Premier League this season under Nuno Espirito Santo, where the Wolves boss has kept his starting Xl unchanged in each of their opening eight games.

Doherty feels this has helped Wolves to remain strong defensively where they have kept four clean sheets and conceded six goals so far.

“Yes of course (that continuity has helped),” he said. “If you don’t concede goals then you will probably win most of your games. With the players that we have going forward, chances that we can create, if you can keep a clean sheet you can probably get one goal.”

Doherty is one of 10 senior Wolves players to earn international call-ups and could make his first competitive start for the Republic of Ireland against Denmark on Saturday.
