Murray is congratulated after his penalty save

Dave Jones' team ended 19 years of hurt by finally returning Wolves to the top flight with a 3-0 play-off final win over Sheffield United in Cardiff.

But it all could have been different had Matt Murray not saved Michael Brown's penalty early in the second half.

Neil Warnock's side were famed for being comeback kings that season, but Murray's excellent save from midfielder Brown blunted the Blades and Wolves returned to the big time.

Now Brown has revealed how keeper Murray put him off before the spot kick – by showing him where he'd put all of his spot kicks that season.

Brown, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, takes up the story: "I played in the play-off final, we were 3-0 down against Wolves at Cardiff.

"We got a penalty and I'd scored all six that I'd taken that season.

"Matt Murray's in goal and he deliberately stands and shows me the side that I've taken all my penalties to.

"I'm looking and thinking 'oh no, what do I do here?!'.

"He's left a big gap on the side I'm going, so I didn't disappoint, I put it right in the middle of the goal on that side and he's saved it.

"I didn't change my mind and he's just leapt across, he's a big unit.

"Neil Warnock's never forgiven me, he thinks I missed on purpose because I wanted to get a transfer to the Premier League or somewhere different.

"Penalties are not a good memory for me."
