Joleon Lescott: Wolves can fight off predators
Ex-Wolves man Joleon Lescott says the club are in a great position to fight off interest star players like Ruben Neves.
After an impressive start to the campaign the likes of Neves, Diogo Jota and Joao Moutinho are likely to attract attention.
But Lescott says Wolves’ ambitions and their financial muscle should mean they have no problem holding on to their better players.
“A big club could be interested in Neves in January depending on how well he does, they are all going to be interested as he is a good player,” Lescott, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said.
“But in terms of what Wolves are trying to do I don’t think they will be in any rush to sell him (or )to even make him available.
“I am confident that Wolves are in a good position financially.
“Collectively the club and stability that they have means they are well-equipped to withstand pressure for their players.
“You’ve got to meet the ambitions of your players and Wolves saying they want to play in Europe does that.
“Then Moutinho came from Champions League football in the past, and I’m sure he wants to get back there as soon as possible.”
Moutinho and Neves have formed a formidable midfield partnership so far this season.
Lescott is impressed with what he’s seen.
“I don’t think they would walk into any other team, but they are very well equipped to play at that level,” he said.
“They are both international players, Moutinho has played internationally for a number of years, Neves has obviously done well in the Championship last season.
“Again, there is no suggestion he can’t do that again, but obviously he is going to be judged on his performances this season. You can’t be judging players off one good season in the Championship, with all due respect.
“With Moutinho, I was at Everton and we were linked with him then to play alongside Mikel Arteta, so I am aware of his qualities.
“He has come into the Premier League and he is an established international so it’s no surprise he has done well.
“I’m sure there were bigger teams, no disrespect to Wolves, that were unaware he was available.
“They probably didn’t even enquire, and obviously the connection with Mendes has helped that happen.”
Nuno Espirito Santo is another who will attract the attention of the bigger clubs if Wolves continue to do well.
But Lescott said: “I don’t think he will be in any rush to leave anytime soon.
“I believe he trusts and believes his players, they trust his methods and it’s worked and proved for them.
“Why wouldn’t they trust what he wants and asks?”
