Ruben Neves glad to play with Euro winners at Wolves
Ruben Neves is delighted to be playing alongside European champions Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho at Wolves.
The duo, who won the Euros with Portugal in 2016, arrived at Molineux this summer as Nuno Espirito Santo set about strengthening his team for the Premier League.
And Neves says having team-mates of such calibre at Wolves and Portugal will help his development as a footballer.
Speaking about his own experience playing for Portugal, whom he has represented since 2015 at senior level, the 21-year-old said: “It’s incredible (to play for your country).
“Every player wants to play for their national team. I’ve played with some very good players, who I watched when I was younger.
“It’s very good for me and I hope I can help the team again in the future.
“They are the European champions so it’s good to play with some of the winners again at Wolves.”
Neves is now playing in the Premier League with Wolves, but he believes the best competition in the world is the Champions League.
The playmaker became the youngest ever captain of a side in the European Cup when he wore the armband for Porto aged 17 years, five months and eight days.
And Neves revealed it is the desire of every footballer to play in the continental tournament.
He said: “It’s the best league in the world, every player wants to play in the Champions League.
“I played against some of the best players in the world and it helped me to grow as a player. Juventus’ stadium was the best I played at, also Dortmund and Bayern Munich had a good atmosphere.”
Before Neves signed for Wolves, in a £15.8million deal that broke the club’s transfer record last summer, Neves had played for Porto since 2005.
And he called it a dream to have played for his boyhood club for 12 years.
“Every memory is good from Porto,” said Neves.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t win any titles with Porto, but it was my dream to play for the club and I achieved that.
“It’s been my team since I was young, so it was very good to play for Porto, I love the club.”
Neves scored on his debut for Porto, which came in August 2014 against CS Maritimo.
The midfielder revealed the goal was a trademark one of his, where he waited for a rebound from a corner.
“It was my first game for Porto and it was incredible. It was a corner which they cleared and like usual I was on the second ball, and I shot with my first touch which was really good – a dream.”
