Wolves battled to a 2-2 draw against Everton on their Premier League return at Molineux with Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez scoring the goals.

And while Nuno admitted the result ‘was not what everybody wanted’, he heaped praise on the home supporters and Wolves’ team spirit.

“I knew the atmosphere at Molineux was going to be like that,” said the 44-year-old. “The sound of the people was incredible.

“The team needs that, everybody needs that. Maybe the result was not what everybody wanted, but the atmosphere and the team spirit was there and I think we should be proud of ourselves.”

Wolves played their first Premier League game in six years and it was the first game of Nuno’s second season in charge, having guided Wolves to the Championship title last year.

Asked if the atmosphere felt different to the Championship, he said: “No, we are at home. We had atmospheres like this last season.

“Today everyone was supporting and buzzing and Molineux was very good.

“But we had it, I have to thank them, when you are chasing a result and have a crowd like this behind you, you double your efforts, no doubt about it. Today the boys were very, very helped by them.”

Neves scored a well-placed free-kick just before half-time to equalise for Wolves, curling the ball into the top right corner. And Nuno was full of praise for the finish.

“It was fantastic, of course, it was a beautiful goal, it gets us back in the game, then we (go behind and) get one back at the end of the game, so joy and sadness,” he said.

Wolves were without new signings Adama Traore and Leander Dendocnker in the squad for Saturday’s game, and they were also without winger Ivan Cavaleiro.

Nuno revealed Cavaleiro was absent due to injury but could not predict when he would be back in the side.

He said: “He had a problem in a training session a couple of weeks ago. You see for example against Stoke that we tried to manage his work.

“Last week against Villarreal also we managed his time so we are taking care of Ivan on those terms. We have to manage because he is not totally fit, not 100 per cent, that is one of the reasons that he was not available today.

“I can tell you he needs to rest. First to feel free of pain, then we can start training him again, we have to reason because he is in pain

now.”
