Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo appoints former Hearts manager Ian Cathro as his first team coach
Nuno Espirito Santo has appointed former Hearts manager Ian Cathro as Wolves's first team coach as he looks to strengthen his backroom team.
Cathro has rejoined Nuno, after serving as his deputy at Rio Ave and Valencia, to help guide Wolves in their first season back in the Premier League.
Cathro, aged 31, met with the first team squad at Compton yesterday on their first day back of pre-season training.
He said: “I am very excited about joining Wolves and looking forward to working with a coach and staff I know, trust and believe in.
“All of us share the same footballing philosophy and that is such an important factor for a successful coaching team.
“Wolves is a fantastic club with a rich history and lots of potential, and I can’t wait to get started.”
The pair first met on a Scottish Football Association coaching course in 2009 before the Scotsman went on to become Nuno's assistant at Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2012.
There they enjoyed much success over two years, including two cup finals, European qualification for the time in the club's history and a sixth-place league finish.
Nuno took Cathro with him to Valencia in 2014 where he served for one year before Cathro left the Spanish outfit for family reasons.
Cathro then became assistant manager at Newcastle United in 2015/16, before an eight-month-spell as manager of Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian in 2016/17.
He was linked with a coaching move to Molineux at the start of last season after he lost his job at Hearts.
He joins Nuno as the 44-year-old gears up for the 2018/19 campaign and looks to build on his success after winning the Championship title and promotion in his first year in charge.
