Patricio, 30, signed for Wolves on a four-year-deal and is currently in Russia with Portugal as their first-choice goalkeeper in the World Cup.

But Murray, who made 106 Wolves appearances, believes there will be a healthy competition for places next season – after John Ruddy enjoyed a stellar Championship campaign, claiming the most clean-sheets in the division.

Murray, 37, said: “Patricio wouldn’t be coming to Wolves if he didn’t think he would be playing. He is a top goalkeeper, I would consider him one of the best in Europe. He has played at the top level in the Champions League.

"He is at a great age to be a goal-keeper. I think there will be a real competition for places next season.

"John Ruddy did amazing last season and was super professional when he came in.

"He wasn’t overly talked about but had a few moments that will go down in folklore including the penalty save at Cardiff.

“Ruddy will believe he has got the gloves and will be up for a fight.”

Patricio joined Wolves on a free transfer after terminating his contract at Sporting following an attack by his own fans. However it remains unclear whether Wolves will have have to pay compensation to Sporting.

Murray reckons Sporting Lisbon will not let him go without a fight. He said: “I think every good save he makes at the World Cup pushes up his compensation price-tag.

But I want Patricio to do well as it will boost his confidence and he will come back better. It is a double-edged sword.”

Murray added: “As much has it’s been an unbelievable season with Wolves and watching England in the World Cup, I think for every single Wolves fan, the best news will be Carl Ikeme is in remission.

"That is phenomenal news and I know he will be touched by all the love he has had.”
