Johnny Phillips: I'm a big fan of Wolves kits
Wolves’ new Adidas home and away strips for the Premier League appear to have gone down really well.
I’m definitely a big fan of both kits, particularly the return to an all-white away kit, prompting memories of many a victory on the road back in the bottom two divisions during Graham Turner’s reign in the late 80s.
Tim Spiers’ enjoyable feature in this paper yesterday on Wolves kits through the years threw up a few classics.
The Umbro kit worn during the beginning of the 80s remains my favourite, with the big black collar and shiny gold sponsor-free shirt.
There were two particularly awful efforts in the 1990s though. The shocking tyre-marked 1992 shirt – a nod to sponsors Goodyear – remains an eyesore. Not even the passage of time has given it any retro kudos, it’s just a terrible kit.
Four years later, the dreadful wolf-head baggy shirt with black sleeves was another one to avoid. It came with a particularly gruesome dark green away kit that was just as ugly on the eye.
There is a fairly straight forward formula to producing a decent successful kit that will stand the test of time – the best Wolves kits down the years have always been the simplest.
