Afobe signed for Wolves for £10 million last Friday but has been linked with a shock £12m switch to the Potters.

Speaking at his first press conference, Rowett wouldn't confirm specific targets but revealed he wants players who can play at Premier League and Championship levels.

He said: "I think when you look at some of the players you’re linked with – and at this stage of the summer I could look at 100, probably five are true, the others will be agent led."

"It’s the nature of the business but the standard of some of the players we’ve been linked with are the standard we want to bring to the club.

“Goals was an issue last season so of course that’s something we want to rectify. In my opinion we should be trying to sign the type of player that, age wise, fit the profile we are after and are good enough to play in this division and also the division above should we achieve our goal.

“It’s very simple. The market is not limited. The owners have said they will try to competitively try to back me this summer with bringing in players but it’s difficult to put a number on specific targets.”

Afobe returned to Molineux on loan last season where scored six goals in 16 appearances, before signing a permanent deal at the of the campaign.

But it is believed Afobe is now in talks with Stoke as part of a sudden switch to the bet365 Stadium.
