Carl Ikeme earns honorary Nigeria World Cup spot
Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has been selected by Nigeria as their honorary 24th player for the World Cup.
Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia ahead of Wolves' title-winning season, has not played a game this campaign due to his ongoing treatment.
However, the Nigerian international coach, Gernot Rohr, has selected him as an extra player - as is tradition for the African side.
The nation previously selected Tijani Babangida and former West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie as their unregistered players for their USA 1994 and South Korea/Japan 2002 squads.
Ikeme featured during Nigeria's World Cup qualifying success, helping them to the top of their group to book their place in Russia.
Rohr confirmed the news ahead of June's tournament.
"Until the last moment, there is a possibility of bringing in these players." he said.
“Carl Ikeme will be our 24th player to the World Cup.”
Nigeria's first match in the tournament will be against Croatia on June 16th, before clashes with Iceland and Argentina on the 22nd and 26th of the month.
