Wolves needed Fulham to either draw or lose in order to secure promotion - but the celebrations looked set to be on hold as Fulham lead 1-0 deep into injury time.
However a goal by Neal Maupay in the closing moments pulled the scores level to 1-1 for Brentford and sent Wolves fans - watching on from screens around the city centre - celebrating.
Fans had their flags on hand in case Wolves were promoted and the celebrations began after the referee blew for full time.
Season-ticket holder Steve Haskett, aged 48 from Finchfield, said: "It is fantastic to get promotion. I hope we win tomorrow to add icing on the cake."
Dr Desire Mutumda, 50 from Wolverhampton, added: "I can't express my joy enough. It is amazing to be back in the Premier League."
