Steve Bull: Surprised to see Neil Warnock rated above Wolves leader Nuno
I see that Neil Warnock was named as manager of the season this week – that’s a bit of a surprise to me.
For a start I’m not sure why they don’t wait until the season’s finished to name the best manager in the league.
Anything could happen in the final weeks of the campaign, Cardiff could blow it or so could Wolves.
Full credit to Warnock, he’s done a great job at Cardiff and knows the Championship inside out.
He’s got a proven track record at a number of clubs and gets the best out of his players.
But for me the best manager is the one who wins the league. I hope I’m not kicking myself here but at the moment Wolves and Nuno are in the prime position to do that.
There’s the argument that Wolves have had far more money to spend than Cardiff but however much you spend it’s about putting a team together and making it work.
Wolves spent loads last season and were bang average in mid-table. Middlesbrough’s team has cost even more than Wolves’ and they’re struggling to make the play-offs.
So it’s not all about money and if Wolves win the league I don’t think you can argue about Nuno being the best boss in the division.
Still, I’d rather Warnock win that and Wolves can have the title!
Wolves also had three players in the team of the season, while Ruben Neves is up for player of the year and young player of the year – all richly deserved.
Conor Coady has been outstanding and while a few people questioned John Ruddy being in the team I think he’s had a very good season.
He’s been an ever present and been very solid until perhaps the past few weeks where he’s started having the odd fumble and misjudging a couple of crosses, which may be a confidence issue.
He’s been promoted twice with Norwich before so let’s make sure he gets his hat-trick.
You need the experience of someone like that in the dressing room and I’m sure he’s played an important role keeping everyone’s heads together in recent weeks. That shouldn’t be underestimated.
