McCarey came through the ranks at Wolves and played seven times for the first team.
The 26-year-old left Molineux after a long association with the club in 2016 and joined Scottish side Ross County.
Former team mate Carl Ikeme tweeted his support for McCarey.
McCarey will join up with another ex-team mate Matt Doherty in the Ireland squad ahead of their game against Turkey on Friday.
