Bully: Wolves are no one game wonder
The 3-0 win against Reading was a statement, writes Steve Bull.
We said ‘listen, we’re not just a one-game wonder, we are a season wonder – we’re not like Villa – we are doing it more or less every game’.
Saturday at Villa Park was very disappointing. The first half was very even-stevens. We came back to one-each and I thought we were going to take the game to them.
But they got the second goal and we just crumbled. We didn’t know what to do. It was weird – it looked like 11 different players on the pitch. You’re going to get those games then again. Fair play to Villa.
You hold your hands up, wave the white flag and say ‘You beat us this time, let’s go to the next game’.
Without me being biased, that was the best Villa have played in four years. But you have got to do it week-in, week-out and their defeat against QPR shows they can’t do that.
We can do it. We have sustained it and that’s why we are where we are.
Reading was an ideal game and Nuno would have got them fired up for it. He knows which players to use and how to play them.
I thought his team selection on Tuesday night was one of the best this season. Putting Benik Afobe and Ryan Bennett in were good choices.
It did not surprise me to see four changes. Nuno studies the games inside out, sees mistakes and wants perfection the next game. We seem to bounce back every time there is a loss.
Afobe will be delighted to have scored on his first start. He will realise the chances he will get with Wolves at the moment are coming thick and fast.
You have to get your foot on the pedal and score every one. In my eyes as a striker you have to get that hunger to get your goals. He will get that back. Hopefully we can get him on a permanent deal.
Matt Doherty was brilliant. If I had to select a Wolves XI I’d have him in my team all day long. He keeps wide, wins every header, plays it around. He has got 13 goals for Wolves now which is scary for a right-back.
He has got his head down, rolled his sleeves up and is giving it a good go.
The bad news was with Diogo Jota’s injury.
You know when Jota is injured. He is like me; we bounce. I used to get kicked left, right and centre but we bounced back up. When he rolled twice I said ‘That isn’t Jota, he’s injured’.
I’m hopeful it’s just a couple of weeks for him.
