Nuno: Wolves players are sticking together

Wolves’ 1-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday ended a four-game winless streak and extended their lead to 12 points ahead of Derby’s game at Millwall tomorrow night.

The squad arrived at Portman Road on the back of a week-long excursion to Spain. And Nuno said the players forged strong bonds during their mid-season break.

“They created bonds that are important,” he said. “Besides the hard work they did there, the bonds and the time spent together away from the pitch, that creates a lot of things that are important in the competition.

“Sticking together, helping each other, that says a lot. They gain the credit that allowed ourselves to go and at the same time work and relax. Most importantly is the friendship they’ve built between them.

“It’s a fantastic group in that respect. A lot of people say the players that came in would find it difficult to adapt and all these things but the players that were here before, this is the strong point of this, the way they received the new players and built this group of men that want to work and succeed together.”

The head coach suggested after last week’s defeat to Nottingham Forest that his players needed reminding how far they had to go to win promotion.

“They have this message,” he said after Ipswich. “We still have a long way to go and we know. We’re not going to be comfortable or expecting things to happen – we have to work for it.”

Wolves have made only one splash in the transfer market this window, signing 20-year-old striker Rafa Mir who wasn’t in the squad at Portman Road.

Nuno didn’t rule out further additions before Wednesday night’s deadline. He said: “It’s open, like I always say. We’re really pleased with the squad but the market is there so we have to stay wise and realise if a good chance comes, OK. But at the same time we have to not allow anyone to go away.”
