The Blades boss saw success against Nuno's side earlier on this season, winning 2-0 at Bramall lane in a game where Conor Coady saw red, before two Leon Clarke strikes secured the three points for his side.

However, with the prospect of a trip to Molineux approaching in February, Wilder has accepted that Wolves won't be caught this season.

"Ta-ra, bye-bye. They're gone." he said of Wolves on TalkSport, before stating that the competition are now battling for the second automatic promotion spot.

"Below us there's the likes of Middlesbrough, Preston, Brentford and Fulham who will all fancy sticking a run together to pop themselves in [to second place].

"It's a big period after Christmas now going into the New Year, and any team that can stick a run together - three, four or five wins together will shoot themselves into them spots."

Wilder joins a host of managers who have hailed Wolves this season including Carlos Carvalhal, Thomas Christiansen, Leonid Slutsky and even ex-Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, and now sit 12 points clear of second placed Derby and 14 clear of the play-off spots.

Wolves could stretch their lead in the table to 15 points should they secure victory away at Barnsley this weekend and Derby slip up against struggling Birmingham City.
