Boss Nuno backs Roderick Miranda after Wolves defender named in match-fixing investigation
Boss Nuno Espirito Santo says Roderick Miranda has his and Wolves’ ‘total support’ after the defender was named in a match-fixing investigation.
Reports in Portugal have claimed the 26-year-old centre-back is one of four suspects in an ongoing police investigation into alleged match-fixing during last season’s Primeira League game between Rio Ave and Feirense.
Miranda, who joined Wolves from Rio Ave last summer, has been named alongside former team-mates and fellow defenders Marcelo and Nadjack, along with goalkeeper Cassio.
Betting on the fixture, which took place in February, was suspended prior to kick-off after an unusually high bet of £100,000 – which reports have claimed came from China – was placed on a Feirense win.
An investigation was then launched immediately following the match, which Feirense won 2-1.
Wolves declined to make any public comment but when quizzed on the matter yesterday, Nuno made clear his ‘total trust’ in Miranda, who he previously signed while in charge of Rio Ave in 2013. “It’s speculation outside this country and I don’t really wish to comment,” said the boss.
“All I will say is he was my player before, he is my player now, I totally trust and support him. We as a club support him.”
Miranda, who has made 16 appearances this season, remains available for selection at Wolves and could feature in this evening’s top-of-the-table Championship clash at Bristol City.
In a statement, Rio Ave expressed their displeasure at details of the investigation being leaked prior to its conclusion, warning it could be potentially damaging. Rio Ave also made clear their ‘full confidence’ in the players who, Miranda excepting, all remain with the club.
Any player found guilty of match-fixing faces a likely lifetime ban from the game, while in Portugal the charge carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
