The 18-year-old has not played since August after requiring surgery on an injured knee. He is not expected to play again this season due to the meniscus damage.

Highly-rated forward Ennis had previously missed lengthy spells after twice fracturing his fibula with parent club Wolves.

Ennis made two appearances for Town, including one start. Paul Hurst revealed he returns to Molineux with Town's best wishes and that Shrewsbury will continue to track his progress.

Hurst said: "With Niall, because of the injury and his previous injury record they obviously want to be very careful with him.

"I certainly wouldn't want to put a player under any pressure to get back sooner or want him to train at a certain level that Wolves didn't want.

"It's been agreed he'll go back. We certainly wish Niall well, there's no hard feelings there or anything. It's just better for him in terms of taking it slightly slower and being monitored.

"They'll see when it's right to go back in that under-23 squad. He's still a very, very young player with lots of time on his side. His health and fitness come first. We felt it was the best thing to do all round.

Ennis' one start for Town came in the narrow Carabao Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest, winning a late penalty for his side.

He made a brief cameo at AFC Wimbledon before breaking down with the injury.

Town's boss added: "I'm sure we'll all see Niall playing and scoring goals for someone, whether that's Wolves or another loan period first.

"He's someone that we will continue to monitor once he's back playing."
